Abstract
The purpose of this study is to elucidate the experiences of social workers who had a client suicide based on the phenomenological approach of Giorgi. We conducted in-depth interviews with the six social workers who have experienced a client suicide more than one year ago. From the results, we found five core-elements and 13 sub-elements regarding social workers" experiences related to a client suicide. The 5 core-elements were as follows: 1) perceiving the wall of suicide, 2) feeling lost in a whirlpool of emotion, 3) coping strategies between depression and recovery, 4) facing changes in the social work practice after a client suicide, and 5) holding the weight of a client suicide and living as a social worker. This study suggests practice and policy strategies that help the social workers who experienced a client suicide improve their job satisfaction and recovery.
